About The Waterville Sewerage District
The Waterville Sewerage District owns and operates the public sanitary sewer and storm sewer collection systems in Waterville, Maine. The District was established in 1949 and took over the control, management, maintenance and operations of the sanitary sewer/storm system. The system was a combined system at that time. The purpose of the District was to provide an independent Board of Commissioners to manage the system and represent the interest of its customers. This Board was given the right and duty to establish and amend rates and fees for the purpose of operating, maintaining, and upgrading the system. The Board is comprised of five (5) members who are nominated by the Mayor of the City of Waterville and confirmed by the City Council.
In 1971 the treatment component was established when the Kennebec Sanitary Treatment District was formed, and the treatment plant developed.
Over the years the District has upgraded significant portions of the collection system, expanded the system, and in 2005 completed the separation of the sanitary sewer and storm sewer collection systems.
